Smart Start
of Henderson County Starts an AmeriCorps Program
What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a
network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more
than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s
critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.
AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies,
and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000
men and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans
across the nation through their AmeriCorps service. Full-time members who
complete their service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to
pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans.
Members who serve part-time receive a partial Award. Some AmeriCorps members
may also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service.
AmeriCorps is a program of the
Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal
agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with
opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. The
Corporation also oversees
Senior Corps and
Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 1.5
million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.
One of such programs ,
AMERICORPS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER (ACT), has been “Getting Things Done” for
children in North Carolina. ACT combines the AmeriCorps national service
program with North Carolina.s Smart Start initiative. ACT serves young
children by placing AmeriCorps members in childcare settings as Early
Childhood Education Assistants. The ACT program was designed to assist with
the need for teacher education and the enhancement of quality childcare, for
children 0 to 5. ACT does this by: 1) training AmeriCorps members in child
development and early childhood education; 2) utilizing members as
substitute teachers, thereby providing regular teachers/providers with
release from the classroom to pursue coursework in early childhood
education; and 3) utilizing members as assistant teachers as a means to
reduce the high teacher/child ratios and provide additional resources to
care providers.
