Families come in different shapes and sizes. Their needs are many
and are constantly changing. Smart Start of Henderson County believes that strong, healthy families must be nurtured and supported in
order for children to grow strong and healthy. In providing funding
to agencies, institutions, and organizations serving the needs of
families, Smart Start is supporting the following Family Support Activities:
FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAMS
Parents As Teachers
This activity is affiliated with the Parents as Teachers national model
and is an early childhood parent education and family support program
designed to empower parents to give their child the best possible start in
life. Parents as Teachers is a voluntary prevention program that
offers families: a minimum of one personalized home visit per month by
certified Parent Educators; monthly group "Sharing Time" meetings held at
various locations in the county to help families gain new insights and share
new experiences; periodic development screenings of children, including
assessment of language, hearing, and vision; information to assist parents
in locating community services; and access to a parent lending library.
Families participating in the program will develop their ability to provide
learning opportunities leading to school readiness for their young children,
as well as obtaining needed information about early care and education.
