Smart Start investments improve the quality of child care for all young children in Henderson County, make child care affordable for working families, and helps support families to be the strong role models children need for a strong foundation for success.
Early Education Programs
One of our top priorities is improving the quality of care that all young children receive in licensed child care centers in Henderson County. This is accomplished by providing the tools early educators need to pursue a degree in early care and education, through early educator trainings and technical assistance designed to improve child care quality.
Our family-focused programs give parents the tools they need to support the healthy development of their children. By providing high quality care for children while their parents work or attend school and translating information on early brain development into specific advice about when, what, how and why young children develop, Smart Start is enabling parents to be the strong role models their children need.

Early Literacy Programs
Over the past few years, Smart Start has significantly expanded early literacy programs. Literacy affects our state’s ability to create a workforce needed to compete in the global market and ensure our future prosperity. Recognizing that over 90% of language development occurs in the first few years of life, Smart Start provides programs that develop early literacy skills needed for success in school, work and life. These evidence-based programs assist parents in developing habits of daily reading with their children, and assist children in discovering an early love of reading.
